What do restlessness and screaming mean?

Restlessness and screaming are the most common symptoms in babies that the little ones are uncomfortable. There can be several reasons for this:

  • Maybe your baby is hungry or thirsty.
  • Your baby may be in pain because he is getting a tooth or has 3-month colic.
  • Quite often, little things like a wet or too tight diaper are the cause of restlessness and screaming in the baby.
  • Your child may just be bored or annoyed that they can no longer reach a toy.
  • Babies can also sense the psychological distress of a tense parent and respond to it with restlessness and screaming.

The simplest explanations are usually the right ones! In many cases, it helps to calm down your baby and move it or pick it up for a while. However, if your child behaves differently than usual, you should consult a doctor.

What can I do?

First, try to calm your baby down. If you can calm it down by picking it up and carrying it around, it may have had a bad dream or woke up for some other reason.

If there is no calming down, you can ask yourself the following questions to determine the cause:

  • Is your baby dressed comfortably and loosely - or is something pressing?
  • Could the diaper be full or wet?
  • Is it hungry?
  • Does it have a stomachache?
  • When was the last time your baby drank? Does it have flatulence?
  • Does it get teeth?
  • Does it have any other symptoms (fever, cough, etc.)?
  • Is there any pain somewhere that you cannot assess with certainty (earache, headache)?

If you are unsure why your child is crying, you must ultimately see the pediatrician. Sometimes there are clues in the baby's behavior. For example, babies often touch the affected ear when they have an earache.

In other cases it is very difficult to assign the screaming and the restlessness to a cause. There are serious illnesses (such as intestinal obstruction) that do not cause any external symptoms other than shouting for no reason!

So you have to take it seriously if you can't calm your baby down as usual!

If your baby is generally jumpy and often cries for long periods of time for no apparent reason, you should ask your pediatrician to clarify the cause. Your doctor will clarify whether the chronic restlessness and irritation may be due to a congenital disease.
