Oncology is a branch of internal medicine. It deals with the prevention, diagnosis, therapy and follow-up of cancer.

The main goal of oncological treatment is the removal or destruction of the entire tumor tissue. If this is not possible, an attempt is made at least to reduce the size of the tumor, alleviate the symptoms and extend the life of the patient.

The main treatment methods in oncology are:

• surgical removal of the tumor
• Chemotherapy with cytostatics
• radiotherapy
• Drug therapy with new classes of active ingredients, which mostly target special forms of cancer (monoclonal antibodies, tyrosine kinase inhibitors)
