For fear of the further spread of the corona virus, the Biathlon World Cup will take place in the Czech Nove Mesto in front of empty spectators. The Thai government is postponing the second MotoGP race of the season indefinitely.

(lv / dpa) The biathlon world cup in the Czech Nove Mesto na Morave (Neustadt in Moravia) takes place in front of empty spectator stands. That was decided by the National Security Council in Prague on Monday, as Prime Minister Andrej Babis said at a press conference. The reason is the fear of the coronavirus epidemic spreading further.

The competitions are scheduled to take place from March 5th to 8th. The organizers had expected up to 100,000 visitors. In the next few days, the Czech government wants to decide on possible further measures for major events.

In the Czech Republic, the first three cases of illness with the novel corona virus were confirmed on Sunday.

MotoGP races postponed indefinitely

The Thai government goes one step further: After the cancellation of the season opener in Qatar, the second MotoGP race of the year has been postponed indefinitely due to the corona virus. The motorcycle world championship has not been canceled in principle, but will be postponed until it is safe, said Thai Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul on Monday. "We still can't say when."

The motorcycle world championship was to take place from March 20 to 22 in the province of Buri Ram, around 400 kilometers northeast of Bangkok. It would have been the third time that Thailand has hosted the races. So far, there have been 43 cases in the Southeast Asian country in which the virus has been detected.

Concerns about the spread of the virus have already influenced other sporting events. The Paris half marathon has been canceled. At the Ski World Cup in La Thuil, Italy, reporters and cameramen had to keep a distance of at least one and a half meters from the athletes.
