Doctors speak of a crying baby if the child cries for more than three hours a day and more than three days a week for more than three weeks.

Screaming attacks usually start around two weeks of age and generally last three months. In rare cases, the crying phase extends up to the 6th month of life.

Aside from excessive crying, babies are usually healthy and thriving. But they are very restless and difficult to calm down. Often, toddlers also have problems falling asleep and staying asleep. During the crying and restless phases, the child often stretches and writhes and has a distended stomach.
