Loosened ligaments in the area of the pelvic bones can cause uncomfortable discomfort. Here you can find out what causes such pelvic weakness during pregnancy, what symptoms it triggers and what can be done about it!

What is pelvic weakness?

A pelvic weakness (pelvic ring loosening) is a loosening of the ligaments that hold the pelvic bones together in the area of the pubic symphysis (symphysis). This happens through physical stress, but also through hormonal changes in the course of pregnancy. The ligaments in the cross area are also weakened. This can lead to lower back and pelvic pain.

How does a pelvic weakness feel?

The pain is in the pubic area and radiates to the thighs and sacrum. They worsen with movement (walking, climbing stairs, etc.). In addition, the women affected cannot turn from the supine position to the side position. Standing on one leg is also not possible.

The pain worsens with movement:

  • when the pregnant woman wants to turn on her side
  • when the pregnant woman lifts her stretched leg while lying down
  • when climbing stairs

Pelvic weakness can occur early in pregnancy and last until after the birth.

What to do with pelvic weakness

If you feel pain, talk to your doctor or midwife. Don't try to clench your teeth! Otherwise you risk an unnecessary aggravation and prolongation of the pain.

Your doctor and midwife know the problem of pelvic weakness and will give you comprehensive advice. A sick leave is almost always necessary.

When you have pelvic weakness, you need to learn the best way to move and the least strain. Physiotherapy or occupational therapy may improve your symptoms. Other measures such as heat therapy or red light can also help. Some women receive a loop bandage to immobilize the pelvic ring or a special support corset.

In addition, pain reliever medication is not absolutely necessary; the above-mentioned measures are often sufficient. It also makes sense for the pregnant woman to get support from family members, friends or domestic help in everyday life - this can be a great relief for the mother-to-be.

What are the chances of recovery?

If pelvic weakness is recognized early and treated properly, the chances of a good birth are pretty good.

Unfortunately, that doesn't mean that the pelvic weakness ends with the birth! Instead, it is important that you take it easy after giving birth. You should also continue to follow the training recommended by your doctor, midwife and / or physical / occupational therapist.
