Vomex A contains the active ingredient dimenhydrinate. It belongs to the group of H1 antihistamines, which weaken the effect of the body's own messenger substance histamine in the brain. This counteracts nausea and vomiting.

When is Vomex used?

Vomex A is used to treat and prevent nausea and vomiting, for example in motion sickness.

What are the side effects of Vomex?

The drug has side effects, some of which can occur frequently or very frequently. A doctor should be consulted in the event of such complaints.

Drowsiness, dizziness, drowsiness and muscle weakness are very common, especially at the beginning of use.

Common Vomex side effects are dry mouth, fast heartbeat (tachycardia), a stuffy nose, blurred vision, increased pressure in the eye and problems urinating.

You may also experience mood swings or gastrointestinal complaints such as stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation or diarrhea.

Restlessness, insomnia, tremors or anxiety can be triggered, especially in children.

Liver dysfunction (so-called cholestatic jaundice) and, in exceptional cases, blood cell damage are also possible.

In addition, allergic skin reactions and increased sensitivity to light can occur, which is why direct sunlight should be avoided. In particular, the dyes used in Vomex A coated tablets can trigger allergic reactions. If necessary, other forms of administration such as Vomex-A syrup, Vomex-A suppositories or Vomex-A sustained-release capsules that do not contain these coloring agents can be used.

With prolonged use, there is a possibility of developing drug addiction. Since sudden discontinuation of the drug after long periods of use can cause sleep disorders, the dose of Vomex should be reduced slowly before discontinuation.

The drug may interact with other drugs and should not be taken without medical advice. It should also be noted that Vomex is not suitable as the sole remedy for nausea and vomiting caused by cytostatics (drugs used to treat cancer).

Contraindications

The drug must not be taken in the case of known allergies to the active ingredient it contains and to other antihistamines. The same applies to the respective auxiliaries, in particular to the colorants contained in Vomex coated tablets.

The drug must not be used in:

  • acute asthma attack
  • glaucoma (called narrow-angle glaucoma)
  • Adrenal gland tumors (pheochromocytoma)
  • Disruption of the production of the blood pigment hemoglobin (porphyria)
  • Seizures (e.g. epilepsy, eclampsia)
  • benign enlarged prostate gland with residual urine formation (prostatic hyperplasia)

Vomex-A prolonged-release capsules must not be taken by children under 14 years of age.

The drug may only be taken after consulting a doctor in the case of:

  • impaired liver function
  • Irregular heartbeat (arrhythmias) or slow heartbeat (bradycardia)
  • certain heart diseases (for example conduction disorders or circulatory disorders of the coronary arteries)
  • Deficiency of the mineral salts potassium or magnesium
  • Asthma and other chronic breathing difficulties
  • Narrowing of the stomach outlet (pyloric stenosis)

If you are taking other medications at the same time, you should inform a doctor so that possible interactions can be prevented.

Particular caution applies when taking at the same time:

  • central depressant drugs such as sleeping pills, sedatives, painkillers and anesthetics
  • Medicines with so-called anticholinergic effects such as atropine, biperiden or tricyclic antidepressants (agents against depression)
  • Medications that can cause potassium deficiency (such as certain diuretics)

Simultaneous use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (antidepressants) can lead to life-threatening intestinal paralysis, urinary retention, an increase in intraocular pressure, a drop in blood pressure and a functional impairment of the central nervous system and breathing.

Special care should also be taken with all drugs that prolong the so-called QT interval in the ECG, for example drugs against cardiac arrhythmias, certain antibiotics, anti-malarial drugs, drugs against allergies or gastrointestinal ulcers (antihistamines) or neuroleptics (drugs for the treatment of mental health problems). mental illness).

If you take medication for high blood pressure at the same time, you may feel more tired.

Vomex can falsify the results of an allergy test, so a doctor should be informed about the intake in this case. The drug can also mask hearing damage caused by certain antibiotics.

Overdose

Poisoning with the active ingredient can be life-threatening, especially for children. A doctor must therefore be consulted in the event of a possible overdose.

Too high a dose of Vomex can manifest itself as a clouding of consciousness ranging from severe fatigue to unconsciousness.

Further signs of excessive Vomex A dosage or poisoning are visual disturbances, dilated pupils, constipation, an accelerated heartbeat and fever with hot, reddened skin and dry mucous membranes. It can lead to states of excitement, increased reflexes and delusions. Cramps and breathing disorders triggered by an overdose can lead to respiratory paralysis and cardiovascular arrest.

Vomex: pregnancy and breastfeeding

The drug can cause premature labor during pregnancy and passes into breast milk. Vomex A should only be taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding on medical advice.

Vomex and alcohol

During treatment with the drug, alcohol should not be drunk, as it can increase the effect.
