AstraZeneca is viewed with suspicion by some citizens. So that no vaccine is left lying around, some federal states have now released it for all those who want to be vaccinated.

Bavaria, Saxony, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and now also Berlin: More and more federal states have overturned the approval restrictions for the AstraZeneca vaccine. Doctors in private practice can now vaccinate him to young and not previously ill people after appropriate advice. The goal: no vaccine should be left lying around.

Afraid of the spades

It had been observed in advance that those entitled to vaccinate refused to be vaccinated with the vector vaccine because they were hoping to be vaccinated with mRNA vaccines from BioNTech or Moderna.

After initial data gaps on the effectiveness of the vaccine, individual cases of cerebral vein thrombosis in connection with AstraZeneca vaccinations had occurred. That is why the vaccine in Germany should only be inoculated to people over 60 years of age.

Elderly hardly affected

Younger people in particular were affected, especially women, and some people who had been vaccinated died. To date, the Paul Ehrlich Institute lists 59 cases for Germany, 45 of them were women, 38 of them were younger than sixty. In total, AstraZeneca vaccinated more than 4.2 million doses of vaccine.

Viewed in absolute terms, the risk of such a complication is therefore low. Since it mainly affects younger people, in whom severe courses of Covid-19 are rare, the vaccine is now preferably offered to older people.

But there are many younger people who, despite the slightly higher risk, would like to be vaccinated with the Astra vaccine. For these, the current guidelines should enable an early vaccination appointment.

Look out for the following symptoms

Anyone who has been vaccinated with AstraZeneca should consult a doctor as soon as possible if the following symptoms occur four to 14 days after the vaccination:

  • Strong headache
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Speech and vision disorders
  • Seizures
  • Impaired consciousness
  • epileptic seizures
  • Signs of paralysis
