Several slaughterhouses in Germany have become corona hotspots. Now the working and living conditions of the employees come to the fore. The federal government announces countermeasures.

Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) and Labor Minister Hubertus Heil (SPD) announced in the Bundestag on Wednesday that the Corona cabinet would adopt stricter regulations on Monday. Merkel spoke of "terrifying news" from the meat industry and referred to the often precarious working and living conditions of the employees. Heil promised: "We will clean up these conditions."

Working conditions in sight

In several slaughterhouses - for example in Coesfeld in Westphalia and Bad Bramstedt in Schleswig-Holstein - corona infections were found in a large number of employees. The working conditions in the industry have come into focus as well as the often overcrowded collective accommodation of the numerous Eastern European temporary workers.

Demand: nationwide binding control quotas

Federal Labor Minister Heil worries about the working conditions and the accommodation of the mostly foreign employees: "As a society, we must not continue to watch how people from Central and Eastern Europe are being exploited in this society."

That is why Heil advocated thinking fundamentally about the currently widespread work contract structures. In addition, the minister campaigned for mandatory nationwide control quotas. Many federal states would have saved too much with the responsible authorities in order to check compliance with the existing occupational safety regulations. (hh / dpa)
