Within this huge field of work, an internist (specialist in internal medicine) can specialize in one of the following areas:

- Metabolism and hormones (endocrinology / diabetology)
- Digestive organs (gastroenterology / hepatology)
- Blood and hematopoietic organs, tumors (hematology / oncology)
- Heart and circulation (cardiology)
- Kidney and urinary tract (nephrology)
- Respiratory organs (pulmonology or pulmonology)
- Skeleton and connective tissue (rheumatology)
In addition, an internist can acquire various additional qualifications, for example in the fields of addiction medicine, infectious diseases and tropical medicine.
Note: Hepatologists are also internists, more precisely gastroenterologists who specialize in diseases of the liver.
