"Trick or Treat": Halloween is a popular modern festival with children. The little candy hunters should rather stay at home next Saturday. The custom of unknown visitors ringing the doorbell is a particular risk for vulnerable population groups.

On the eve of All Saints' Day every year, children and young people in disguise go through the streets in groups on the hunt for sweets and demand “trick or treating” from the neighbors. It is not recommended in Corona times.

"Imposed Encounters"

"To enter the property of other people in Corona times and - sometimes unsolicited - to" impose "an encounter at which the minimum distance can probably not be completely adhered to does not appear to be responsible," said the ministry.

The authority reminded that, in theory, ten people - five in risk areas - could go from door to door, but restricting contacts was “the order of the day.” Especially for vulnerable population groups such as the elderly, it is risky if one ring the bell for them - and hold out a bag for sweets.

With a view to the rising corona numbers, the NRW Ministry of Health has warned against pulling from door to door on Halloween on October 31.

Appeal to common sense

Many municipalities in Rhineland-Palatinate insist on not having Halloween parties. “It is currently decidedly not the time to carry out celebrations and parades, as their type and implementation contradict many current protection requirements for reducing the number of infections,” said a spokesman for the city of Mainz of the German press agency.

"In view of the current development, we appeal to the responsibility of each individual and to restraint when celebrating," said the city of Trier. According to a spokesman, the public order office will also monitor this area more intensively.

"Incalculable risk"

A few days ago the mayor of Kaiserslautern, Klaus Weichel (SPD), advised against Halloween celebrations. Larger groups of children who demanded "trick or treat" from their neighbors represented "an incalculable risk".

Brandenburg's Minister of Health Ursula Nonnemacher (Greens) also declared on Monday that the popular doorbell tours from door to door are too high a risk of infection, the minister said on Monday.

"Snacking in a small circle"

According to the Association of Children and Adolescent Doctors, Federal Family Minister Franziska Giffey (SPD) also recommends that you do without the popular doorbell tours on Halloween. "To run in groups from door to door and collect sweets - this is currently not the time," Giffey told the "world".

The festival, which is especially popular with children, doesn't have to be canceled entirely, said Giffey. "At home, in a small group, dressing up and snacking can also be fun."
