Medical foot care can prevent severe inflammation in the foot in certain diseases. In the future, more people will have a claim.

Remove calluses and work on nails - this can prevent serious inflammation in the foot in certain diseases. From July 1st, 2020, more people will be entitled to podiatry treatment.

Treatment for neuropathy and paralysis

From July onwards, people with statutory health insurance are entitled to medical foot care in more cases. From now on, doctors can also prescribe them for damage to the skin on the feet and toenails. This is especially true for the following clinical pictures:

  • sensory or sensorimotor neuropathy
  • Paraplegic syndrome

According to the Federal Joint Committee (G-BA), podiatry therapy can in future be used by all patients who have been shown to have damage to the foot that is comparable to diabetic foot syndrome and can be traced back to similar sensory disorders.

Avoid inflammation and amputation

"Correctly performed corneal removal and nail processing should avoid consequential damage such as inflammation, which in the worst case can lead to an amputation of the foot," explained Dr. Monika Lelgemann, impartial member of the G-BA and chair of the subcommittee on initiated services.

“As a result of other diseases, comparable damage patterns can occur that can be effectively treated with podiatry therapy. In order to counteract serious secondary diseases here too, the G-BA has expanded the ability to prescribe podiatry therapy as a whole. "

Diabetic foot

Until now, according to the G-BA, medical foot care could only be prescribed for diabetic foot syndrome.

A diabetic foot is a common complication of diabetes (diabetes mellitus). Due to the high blood sugar, blood vessels and nerve tracts are damaged. This makes it easier for wounds to develop on the foot, which can become infected. With the right care measures and good blood sugar regulation, serious complications can usually be avoided.
