Some consumers panic when the shelves in grocery stores are empty. But hamster purchases are not necessary. The supply of fresh food is assured, says the Chamber of Agriculture.

In Schleswig-Holstein, the production of food and the supply of food are secured for the time being. This also applies to the sale of agricultural products, as the Chamber of Agriculture announced on Monday upon request. After the first unrest due to the spread of the virus, they "have adjusted well to the current corona situation".

Hamster purchases caused shortages

Short-term bottlenecks were only caused by hamster purchases. "These could be eliminated quickly, however," said chamber spokeswoman Daniela Rixen. "At the moment, however, a lot has to be changed in logistics," said Rixen. Hotels, restaurants and canteens are currently no longer ordering anything.

But the demand in the food retail sector has increased significantly. This mainly applies to products such as potatoes, flour and dairy products, said Rixen. "Simple dishes such as minced meat and pasta that can also be prepared at home are in demand." The supermarkets are reacting to this trend in the corona crisis.

Changeover to shift work in the food industry

According to the Chamber of Agriculture, food processing companies such as mills and slaughterhouses have often switched to multi-shift operation in order to be able to continue work in the event of corona disease or quarantine. For example, packaging companies were able to meet the higher demand for potatoes by adding additional shifts.

Additional quantities have been procured from Lower Saxony and planned exports to Eastern Europe have been canceled. "It is important that the chain between the farmer, production and consumer is maintained. Here it pays off if they are in one region."

There is a lack of seasonal workers from Eastern Europe

In principle, farmers lack seasonal workers from Eastern Europe. Farms with intensive crops such as strawberries or asparagus are dependent on these workers. (lv / dpa)
