Schools, kindergartens and daycare centers are closing nationwide due to the spread of the coronavirus. Here you can find out which regulations apply where.

Baden Wuerttemberg

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, Baden-Württemberg closes all schools and daycare centers from Tuesday until the end of the Easter holidays. This was announced by Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) on Friday in Stuttgart.

Education Minister Susanne Eisenmann (CDU) said that there should be emergency care if both parents were needed to maintain critical infrastructure. These included the police, fire brigade, the medical and nursing areas, food production and trade as well as energy and water supply.

Bavaria

From Monday (March 16, 2020) all schools, kindergartens and daycare centers in the Free State will be closed - until the beginning of the Easter holidays on April 6. That said Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) on Friday in Munich. This means that educational institutions in Bavaria are effectively closed until April 20. "We will ensure care for parents who work in professions that are critical of the system," said Minister of Education Michael Piazolo (Free Voters) on Friday in Munich.

Berlin

The Berlin schools and daycare centers will be closed from next week (March 16, 2020). The governing mayor Michael Müller (SPD) announced on Friday. The upper school centers will begin on Monday, followed by the other schools.

Due to the school closings, some exams for the intermediate school leaving certificate (MSA) have been postponed. Education Senator Sandra Scheeres (SPD) said on Monday on rbb-Inforadio. The exams in German, mathematics and the first foreign language planned for April 21 would be postponed by two and a half weeks.

Brandenburg

Regular school lessons in Brandenburg are to be suspended for the time being from Wednesday in view of the risk of the spread of the corona virus. This was announced by Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD) on Friday after a special cabinet meeting in Potsdam. School attendance is still possible until Wednesday, but is no longer compulsory.

Bremen

Bremen will close all schools and daycare centers from Monday (March 16, 2020), as the state government announced after a special meeting on Friday.

Hamburg

The schools are closed until April 19th. In addition, regular operations in the daycare centers will be discontinued. The daycare centers will also be closed until April 19. A spokesman for the social welfare authority announced this decision on Thursday (March 19, 2020). On Wednesday, it was decided to close the schools until April 19.

Hesse

Classes at Hessen's schools will be canceled from (today) Monday. For certain pupils in grades 1 to 6 and certain kindergarten children, however, emergency care is guaranteed in small groups. This applies in particular to parents who are employees of the police, fire brigade, regulatory authorities, public health services and hospitals.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, all daycare centers, schools and universities will be closed from Monday. The nationwide closure of educational and care facilities is a central component of a ten-point package of measures that the state government decided on Saturday.

Lower Saxony

Lower Saxony closes all schools and daycare centers. According to information from the German Press Agency (dpa), they will remain closed from Monday, March 16, 2020. After two weeks of unscheduled closure, two weeks of Easter holidays would follow seamlessly on March 30th.

The schools and day care centers in Lower Saxony will offer emergency care until the Easter holidays. Spatial and personal standards would no longer apply. But it is not planned to provide students with tasks or online lessons, said Minister of Education Grant Henrik Tonne (SPD) on Friday about the announced closings due to the corona virus.

North Rhine-Westphalia

In North Rhine-Westphalia all schools close until the Easter holidays. The cabinet decided on Friday, as the German press agency learned from the state government. The exact closing date was initially still open - the "Rheinische Post" reported that the schools should be closed on Wednesday at the latest.

Rhineland-Palatinate

Rhineland-Palatinate is closing more than 2500 daycare centers and around 1600 schools to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Care and lessons will be suspended until the end of the Easter holidays on April 17th, as the Ministry of Education announced on Friday. Emergency care will be made possible on site. The exams for the oral Abitur, scheduled for Monday, should not take place until the week from March 23, 2020.

Saarland

Saarland was the first federal state to announce on Friday night that schools and day-care centers across the country will be closed from Monday, March 16, 2020 due to the corona virus. The State Chancellery announced that this was happening due to the Saarland's situation as a border region. The neighboring area in France is particularly hard hit by the pandemic.

Saxony

From next Monday (March 16, 2020) Saxony wants to suspend compulsory schooling. The children can therefore stay at home, care at schools will be ensured, government circles learned on Friday. This should give teachers, students and parents time to prepare for school closings. The exact timing of closings will be decided later this week.

Saxony-Anhalt

All schools and daycare centers in the state of Saxony-Anhalt will also be closed from this Monday, March 16. Halle an der Saale was the first city to decide on Thursday that all day care centers and schools would be closed from Friday, March 13, 2020. The regulation will initially apply until March 27th.

Schleswig-Holstein

Due to the corona virus, all schools and kindergartens in Schleswig-Holstein will be closed from Monday (March 16, 2020) until the end of the Easter holidays. The cabinet decided on Friday in a special meeting in Magdeburg. "There is no point in further hesitation," said Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (CDU). The time is short until Monday, but it is manageable. "The aim of all of our efforts is to contain the spread of the coronavirus."

Thuringia

In view of the increasing number of infections with the corona virus, Thuringia decided to close schools and daycare centers from Tuesday. This was announced by Thuringia's Minister of Education, Helmut Holter (left) on Friday. The regulation initially applies until the end of the Easter holidays. In Thuringia there are regular Easter holidays this year from April 6th to 18th.
