The field of work of vascular surgery is the blood vessels: Vascular surgeons take care of the necessary examinations to assess the vascular condition and the operative treatment of diseased or injured blood vessels.

For example, vascular surgeons treat patients who suffer from intermittent claudication (PAD, smoker's leg), vascular malformations (e.g. aortic aneurysm) or varicose veins. If, for example, a vessel is narrowed, it can often be surgically re-opened. If this is not possible, a "diversion", a vascular bypass (for example in the heart) can help. And with the implantation of vascular prostheses, blocked or severely damaged vascular sections can be completely replaced, for example in the area of the main artery in the chest or abdomen.
