Hematology is a branch of internal medicine. It deals with the diseases of the blood and the blood-forming organs.

Important haematological diseases are, for example:

  • Anemia
  • Malignant diseases of the blood such as acute and chronic leukemia
  • malignant changes in the lymph nodes (e.g. Hodgkin's disease)
  • Blood disorders of the bone marrow
  • Blood clotting disorders, e.g. excessive tendency to clot (thrombophilia) and hemophilia (hemophilia)

Important diagnostic methods in hematology are blood tests, bone marrow punctures (removal and analysis of bone marrow tissue) and lymph node biopsies (removal and analysis of lymph node tissue).

In the treatment of malignant diseases of the blood or blood-forming system, hematology overlaps with oncology and transplant medicine.
