Aspirin Complex combats the symptoms of a cold or a flu-like infection. The overarching effects of Aspirin Complex are particularly useful for treating swollen mucous membranes around the nose and sinuses. Read all about Aspirin Complex here.

This active ingredient is in Aspirin Complex

Two active ingredients are combined in the Aspirin Complex granulate. Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) reduces cold-related symptoms and fever. It also inhibits inflammatory processes and has a blood thinning effect. Pseudoephedrine hydrochloride narrows the vessels in the nose and sinuses and causes the mucous membranes to swell.

When is Aspirin Complex used?

Aspirin Complex helps with swollen mucous membranes in the nose and sinuses. The preparation also relieves colds, fever and pain associated with a cold or a flu-like infection.

What are the side effects of Aspirin Complex?

Possible Aspirin Complex side effects are:

  • Ulcers in the gastrointestinal tract which, in very rare cases, can lead to a breakthrough
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • severe allergic reactions that occur particularly in patients with asthma (with difficulty breathing, skin reactions, drop in blood pressure)

Other side effects that require clarification by the attending physician are:

  • an increased risk of bleeding
  • Impairment of the gastrointestinal region (stomach pain, digestive problems, inflammation of the stomach lining)
  • an increase in liver values
  • Racing heart
  • decreased urine output (especially in patients with an enlarged prostate)
  • Insomnia, hallucinations, or other effects on cognition
  • local skin irritation (rash, nettle rash, itching)

Mild side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea can also occur.

If side effects are noticed, Aspirin Complex should be discontinued immediately and a doctor informed. The attending physician or pharmacist should also be notified if the restrictions are not mentioned.

If other medications besides Aspirin Complex are taken at the same time, the doctor should be informed in order to avoid interactions. These are possible when using:

  • other blood-thinning preparations (ticlopidine)
  • additional vasoconstricting drugs that have a decongestant effect on the mucous membrane (sympathomimetics)
  • Digoxin, a medicine used to strengthen the heart
  • other pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Medicines that lower blood sugar levels (antidiabetics)
  • Salbutamol tablets (inhalation sprays may, however, continue to be used according to prescription)
  • Means that increase urination (diuretics)
  • antihypertensive drugs (guathinidine, methyldopa, beta-blockers)

You should keep this in mind when using Aspirin Complex

Aspirin Complex Granules must not be used in the case of:

  • Allergies to an active ingredient or other components of Aspirin Complex
  • existing stomach ulcers
  • Impairments that increase the risk of bleeding
  • severe functional impairment of the kidneys and liver
  • known heart failure
  • a simultaneous intake of at least 15 mg methotrexate per week
  • severe high blood pressure and severe coronary artery disease (narrowing of the vessels that supply the heart)
  • Taking certain medicines for depression (MAOIs)

In addition, patients should be particularly careful when using aspirin if:

  • Have allergies to other pain reliever or anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Allergies (skin reactions, itching, nettle rash), asthma, hay fever or other chronic impairment of the respiratory tract exist
  • you have a history of ulceration or bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract
  • the work of the liver and kidneys are impaired
  • an operation is imminent
  • an overactive thyroid, mild to moderate high blood pressure, diabetes or an enlarged prostate

The contents of the Aspirin Complex sachet are poured into a glass of water and the mixture is stirred well, whereby the granules do not completely dissolve. The entire contents of the glass should be swallowed immediately. The aspirin complex solution can be consumed independently of meals.

The daily dose of Aspirin Complex of six sachets must not be exceeded and can be divided into individual doses that are taken four to eight hours apart. The time it takes to take this form of aspirin without seeking medical advice is limited to three days. If the symptoms persist or if there is no improvement in the general condition, a doctor should be consulted.

Aspirin Complex: Elderly Patients

Elderly patients in particular can be sensitive to the ingredients of the aspirin complex. Side effects on the central nervous system such as insomnia or hallucinations are possible.

Aspirin Complex: Children and Adolescents

Young people under the age of 16 should not use Aspirin Complex without consulting a doctor. Use in children can potentially lead to the extremely rare but life-threatening Reye's syndrome.

Aspirin Complex: alcohol

Simultaneous consumption with alcohol leads to increased bleeding in the digestive tract.

Aspirin Complex: ability to drive and use machines

The aspirin complex effect can reduce the ability to react. This impairment can be aggravated by the simultaneous consumption of Aspirin Complex and alcohol. This must be taken into account when performing activities such as actively participating in road traffic or operating machines.

Aspirin Complex: Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Due to a lack of experience about the interaction of acetylsalicylic acid and pseudoephedrine hydrochloride in Aspirin Complex, the drug must not be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Aspirin Complex: overdose

If there is any suspicion of overdose or poisoning with Aspirin Complex, notify a doctor immediately. Typical symptoms are headache, dizziness, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), palpitations, chest tightness, shortness of breath or agitation.

How To Get Aspirin Complex

Aspirin Complex granules can be bought over the counter in all pharmacies. Nevertheless, you should discuss the use of Aspirin Complex in children under the age of 16 with your doctor beforehand.
