Visit to the urologist

Kathrin Rothfischer studied microbiology and genetics in Regensburg after an excursion into German studies. Presenting complex issues in an easily understandable way was her passion even then. That is why she turned this passion into a profession after graduating: After various positions in the medical specialist publishing house and in the public press, she finally found her journalistic home at

Unlike girls, it is less common for boys to have their reproductive organs checked regularly by a specialist doctor. For example, if girls use birth control pills, they have to see a gynecologist on a regular basis. Only he issues the recipe for it. He also checks whether everything is okay while taking the pill. Guys, on the other hand, only go to the urologist if they have a problem with their sexual organs.

Intimate examination

The idea that a stranger is examining your intimate parts of the body is probably very uncomfortable for you. A little consolation: most of them are like you! But if you have symptoms, it is better to see a doctor early than to wait a long time. In most cases, a urologist is the right contact for problems with the genital organs. Most urologists are men, but there are also some female urologists.

Good doctor, bad doctor?

You can recognize a good doctor by the fact that he takes time for you, explains everything clearly and answers your questions. In addition, he ensures that no consultation hour assistance bursts into the treatment room during the examination. Unpleasant examinations are easier to endure when you are comfortable and in good hands.

The first step is always to make an appointment. Often you will then be asked why you want to come. Usually it is enough for you to briefly state what it is about. For example, "I have pain when urinating" or something similar. You can then clarify more details in the treatment room. With the proper exam, the doctor will ask you a few questions and may palpate your penis, testicles, and sometimes your prostate.

Dreaded: the prostate examination

Most boys and men find it particularly uncomfortable when the doctor has to insert a finger into their anus for this examination. There is no other option because the prostate is located inside the body. As a rule, however, prostate examinations are rare in young men. And when it does, it usually doesn't happen during the first visit to the doctor. For older men, however, regular palpation of the prostate is a matter of course as part of cancer screening.

If it should be necessary, even as a young man, there is no need to be afraid of the palpation examination. It only takes a few seconds. Inserting the finger doesn't hurt either, because the doctor uses some lubricating cream to do this.

Not just for men

By the way: women can also go to the urologist. He is not only active in the field of male reproductive organs, but also in the fields of kidney and urinary tract diseases.
