With "airlifts" the British government wants to enable summer vacations and prevent quarantine measures. However, the measures that apply only to England are met with great concern.

In time for the summer vacation, England is loosening its quarantine regulations for travelers from around 50 countries due to the corona pandemic. A good ten overseas territories also benefited from the new regulation, said British Transport Minister Grant Shapps on Friday to the news broadcaster Sky News. Visitors from Germany, France, Spain and Italy, among others, no longer have to isolate themselves for 14 days upon arrival from July 10th.

This means that English people can also travel to other countries at the beginning of the summer vacation period and do not have to go into self-isolation when they return. The government assumes that a number of the countries exempted from the quarantine will not ask British travelers to self-isolate, it said.

The regulation only applies to England

A list of all countries exempted from quarantine should be published on Friday afternoon. The new regulation on the so-called airlifts only applies to England - in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland the old regulations are still in force. A Scottish government spokesman criticized the easing for "states with different (corona) risks". It would also make more sense for all British parts of the country to agree on a common approach first.

"Today marks the next step in the careful reopening of our great nation," Shapps was quoted in a statement from his ministry. That is good news for the British and British companies. "We will not hesitate to act quickly to protect ourselves if infection rates rise in countries we reconnect with."

UK worst hit in Europe

People entering Great Britain have had to leave their address and contact details at the border since June 8 and be quarantined for two weeks. Anyone who does not adhere to the 14-day self-isolation obligation must expect a high fine. Several airlines had filed a lawsuit against it.

With the quarantine requirement, the government wants to prevent a second wave of coronavirus infections in Great Britain due to imported cases. The UK is the hardest hit country in Europe by the pandemic. Prime Minister Boris Johnson's government is accused of having reacted too late and incorrectly to the corona crisis.

Currently, according to Johns Hopkins University, more than 285,000 people in the UK have contracted the virus and over 44,000 have died from it. (lw / dpa)
