Mucosolvan is an expectorant (mucolytic). The remedy makes breathing easier during an infection and helps with coughs and mucus in the airways. Here you can read everything you need to know about the effect and use of the drug.

This active ingredient is in Mucosolvan

The active ingredient used in Mucosolvan is called Ambroxol. It loosens tough mucus in the airways, improves the evacuation of secretions and restores the body's own protective layer on the branches of the trachea. In this way, the immune system and the transport of trapped mucus are supported and respiratory infections are combated.

The following preparations are currently on the market:

  • Mucosolvan cough syrup
  • Mucosolvan lozenges
  • Mucosolvan inhalation solution
  • Mucosolvan tablets
  • Mucosolvan Retard
  • Mucosolvan capsules
  • Mucosolvan drops

When is Mucosolvan used?

The cough syrup Mucosolvan and the other dosage forms are used in diseases of the respiratory tract to loosen stuck mucus. But the remedy can also be used for sore throats.

What are the side effects of Mucosolvan?

Commonly observed Mucosolvan side effects are headache, nausea and vomiting, and fever.

Occasionally ingestion leads to allergic reactions such as rash, water retention on the face, shortness of breath, itching, dizziness, circulatory disorders, diarrhea and abdominal pain.

Skin reactions (such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome or Lyell syndrome, which cause the top layers of the skin to die off) have been observed very rarely. Hypersensitivity reactions up to shock (unconsciousness, drop in blood pressure, spasms of the tracheal branches, swelling of the airways) are also possible, which must be treated immediately by a doctor.

If these Mucosolvan side effects occur or if you experience symptoms that have not been mentioned, a doctor or pharmacist should be consulted immediately.

You should keep this in mind when using Mucosolvan

Mucosolvan cough syrup is taken two to three times a day with a measuring spoon. The corresponding amount depends on the age of the person concerned.

Mucosolvan lozenges are placed on the tongue and then melt by themselves. Children from six to twelve years of age take a lozenge two to three times a day. Adolescents and adults can take one tablet up to six times a day. In the case of severe symptoms, a total daily dose of eight tablets is possible, but should not be taken for longer than four to five days.

Contraindications

If the patient is hypersensitive to the active ingredient or other ingredients, the drug must not be taken.

Particular care should be given to patients who:

  • liver and kidneys are damaged
  • have a disorder of the histamine metabolism (histamine intolerance)
  • who suffer from diabetes (diabetes mellitus)

Interactions are only known with cough suppressants (antitussives), which are also used in the context of colds. If both substances are taken at the same time, the antitussive drugs counteract the cough reflex and make it difficult to cough up the liquefied mucus.

children

The medicine is only to be used in children under two years of age after consulting a doctor. However, some preparations can also be used with younger children (children's juice, drops).

Breastfeeding

It is not clear whether the drug can have negative effects on mother and child. For this reason, Mucosolvan should only be taken during pregnancy under medical supervision.

Mothers should not take the preparation while breastfeeding, as the active ingredient can accumulate in breast milk and be transferred to the infant.

Overdose

An extremely high dose of Mucosolvan can lead to gagging, vomiting or a sharp drop in blood pressure. Contact a doctor immediately if these signs occur.

How to get Mucosolvan

The cough syrup Mucosolvan and the other products are available from pharmacies without a prescription.
