In Croatia, too, more people have recently been infected with the corona virus. The popular travel destination emphasizes that the situation is under control. But the Robert Koch Institute disagrees - that has consequences. However, the all-clear has been given for Luxembourg and parts of Romania.

Due to the increased number of new corona infections, the Federal Foreign Office has issued a travel warning for parts of Croatia as a holiday destination. The travel warning applies to the two southern administrative districts, the so-called Šibenik-Knin counties with the Krka National Park and Split-Dalmatia with the port city of Split and the islands of Brac and Hvar. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) had previously classified the regions as risk areas.

Increasing infection rate

Croatia had recently registered a steep increase in corona cases. On Wednesday, authorities reported a high of 219 cases in the past 24 hours. This means that there are now 1520 active cases in the country of around 4.19 million inhabitants.

“The number of Covid 19 infections was low in Croatia for several weeks, but has recently increased sharply. In the counties of Šibenik-Knin and Split-Dalmatia, the incidences are currently more than 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants over seven days, ”emphasized the Foreign Office. Over the past 14 days, this number has stood at 37.7 for all of Croatia.

The classification as a risk area means that returning holidaymakers are required to test for the corona virus. Until the result is available, they have to go into quarantine at home. You can find out more about this in our article "Corona: Travel advice or risk area".

German tourists important to Croatia

The Croatian tourism industry fears a far-reaching travel warning from the federal government. This “would hit us the hardest”, said the director of the Croatian tourist office in Frankfurt, Romeo Draghicchio, of the German press agency. "The Germans are our number one holiday group."

There were currently around 180,000 holidaymakers from Germany in the EU country on the Adriatic, most of them on the northern Istrian peninsula and on the Kvarner Bay off Rijeka. There are only a few active corona cases there.

New measures should help

Draghicchio was confident that with the help of new measures, the numbers will soon fall again. Clubs now have to close at midnight. In addition, distance rules and mask requirements apply in local public transport and in closed public spaces.

Austria and Italy have already issued a travel warning for Croatia. The neighboring country of Slovenia also wanted to issue a warning on Thursday. "The situation in Croatia is deteriorating dramatically," said Slovenian government spokesman Jelko Kacin on Wednesday.

All clear for Luxembourg and parts of Romania

On the other hand, there is positive news for Luxembourg: The Federal Foreign Office has lifted the travel warning due to the corona pandemic. Luxembourg is comparatively badly affected by the lung disease Covid-19, but is no longer a risk area, says the travel advice: “After the incidence of 50 cases per 100,000 inhabitants was temporarily exceeded for seven days, the numbers are now falling and are below this limit value . “The Robert Koch Institute updated the list of current corona risk areas accordingly.

The Romanian districts of Mehedinți, Ialomița and Timiș are also no longer part of it. The Federal Foreign Office adjusted its partial travel warning for the south-eastern European country on the Black Sea. A new addition, however, is the district of Vâlcea in the Wallachia region.
