Fat children: lose fat without moving

MunichSaving calories and exercising - these are the most important pillars in combating obesity. Now Australian researchers have found that diet alone can also shed the pounds. So children could also lose weight on the sofa.

Bacon melts even without exercise

The researchers from the Children's Hospital in Westmead, Australia, analyzed 15 studies conducted between 1975 and 2010. They compared the effects of diet and diet plus exercise. Overweight and obese children and adolescents aged 18 years and younger were included. The focus was on the body mass index (BMI), body fat, "good" HDL cholesterol, "bad" LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting glucose and insulin.

Result: Diet and diet plus exercise both resulted in weight loss and an improvement in metabolic factors. However, the additional exercise led to greater improvements in HDL levels, fasting glucose and fasting insulin over six months. The percentage of body fat also decreased more and the muscles grew more when the children also did endurance or weight training.

The sole change in diet, however, reduced the triglyceride level and the LDL concentration. However, the authors say that the results have to be treated with caution, because the studies included had a wide variety of designs, there was a lack of individual patient data and, in some cases, the number of participants was too small.

Many children are too fat

Many children do not eat properly and do not get enough exercise. In Germany alone, around 15 percent of all children and adolescents between the ages of three and 17 have too many pounds on their ribs. More than six percent suffer from obesity (obesity). In total, there are around two million overweight children and 800,000 morbidly fat children. (in the)
