After the increased number of corona infections, the Greek government has also ordered restrictions for the holiday region of the Chalkidiki peninsula and the jet set island of Mykonos.

Celebrations, parties, religious celebrations and weekly markets are prohibited from this Friday until August 31st. In addition, gatherings of more than nine people are prohibited. All bars and taverns must close at midnight.

Mask compulsory outdoors

The mask requirement also applies outdoors, as the Greek civil defense announced on Thursday. The government in Athens imposed these new restrictions after a record of 269 new infections had been registered the previous day. Numerous cases of this were found in the two holiday regions.

Taverns close at midnight

Last week, the Greek government ordered the closure of all kinds of taverns and bars in Athens, Piraeus and Thessaloniki as well as on the islands of Paros and Antiparos at midnight. In addition, gatherings of more than 50 people are prohibited across the country.

Risk of contagion for returning travelers

Greece has - measured against its population of a good 10.5 million inhabitants - a low number of infections with the coronavirus. In the past few days, however, the number of infected people had risen suddenly.

The reason is that many vacationers - mostly young people - have infected relatives and friends in the metropolitan areas after their return from vacation. Authorities had observed that vacationers without the necessary distance and without face masks celebrated close together until late at night in bars and discos. (lv / dpa)
