We speak of a fall birth when the baby is born unusually quickly (in less than two hours), the mother only had a short time and few contractions and the child almost "falls to the floor". Injuries to mother and child are possible. Read everything you need to know about a fall birth here.

What does fall birth mean?

A fall birth is a birth process that takes less than two hours from the onset of the first labor to the birth of the child. It is a normal birth, but in most cases the woman giving birth has almost no labor at all, the labor process begins immediately with violent contractions and often even a single expectoral labor is sufficient until the child is born. But it can also happen that slight contractions in advance, which came at great intervals and were hardly painful, were not even perceived as such.

What are the reasons for a fall birth?

There can be various reasons for a fall birth, which lie on the side of the pregnant woman or that of the child:

  • The birth canal is easily stretchable, offers little resistance and the opening of the uterus takes place very quickly (especially in women who have already given birth several times).
  • When pregnancies are close together and the birth canal has not had enough time to regress.
  • For first-time women who suppress or hide their pregnancy.
  • When the baby is very small and the head circumference is small.
  • When the contractions are extremely strong.

What are the risks of a fall birth?

In most cases, a fall birth is accompanied by severe birth pains. The rapid birth process can lead to soft tissue injuries to the birth canal and the pelvic floor and to secondary bleeding.

If a woman suppresses the pregnancy or is not aware of it, she can mistake the onset of labor for an urge to defecate if the feeling of pressure is affecting the intestines. The baby is then often born in the toilet (toilet birth).

A fall birth can cause injury to a child if they fall on the floor or into the toilet. The umbilical cord can tear. In addition, insufficient pressure adjustment in the birth canal during the expulsion phase of the baby can lead to a lack of oxygen (hypoxia) and cerebral haemorrhage. Injuries to the trunk, arms and legs are also possible.

Measures in the event of an impending fall birth

In the event of an impending fall birth, the emergency doctor must be called immediately. The woman giving birth should lie down in bed or on a pillow to reduce the child's fall. If the baby is born before medical attention arrives, it should be kept warm (easiest with warmed towels) and placed on the mother's stomach. The doctor will then take care of everything else.

If previous births have been abnormally rapid, it is advisable to spend the final part of your pregnancy in a clinic to reduce the risk of a fall birth.
