Asthma is a lung disease - that worries many asthmatics in corona times. Those who have the disease under control with medication are probably no more at risk than others. In fact, asthma medics could even help fight off the viruses.

That is the assessment of the German Allergy and Asthma Association (DAAB). This applies to both allergic and non-allergic asthma, said a spokeswoman for the DAAB. In particular, the cortisone-containing sprays that asthma patients use could have a protective effect.

Asthma medication makes it difficult for the viruses

The agents in the asthma sprays act on the ACE2 receptor (angiotensin-converting enzyme 2), which means that it is difficult for the viruses to establish themselves. "When viruses get into the body, they dock on the ACE2, bring their genetic material into the organism with the help of this enzyme and multiply," explained the spokeswoman.

Less treatments in the hospital

According to the association, the number of viruses determines the course of the disease - the more viruses, the more severe the course. Study results from Europe and China have shown that asthmatics who tested positive for corona have rarely been treated in hospital.

In Germany around 10 to 15 percent of children develop asthma. Bronchial asthma is therefore the most common chronic disease in childhood. But many adults are also affected: Seam information from pulmonologists on the Internet suffer about 5 to 7 percent. In total there are around 8 million people. .
