After Switzerland, France is now also banning major events. Sports events in stadiums such as football games are excluded. The Paris half marathon is canceled, however.

(jr / dpa) - France has banned all major events with more than 5000 people due to the corona virus. Health Minister Olivier Véran announced the decision of the Defense and Council of Ministers in Paris on Saturday.

Not a half marathon, but football

The ban mainly affects indoor events as well as some sporting events. Events in stadiums are allowed, Véran said. The half marathon in the French capital on Sunday, however, falls victim to the ban.

According to Véran, the number of infections in France rose to 100 cases by Saturday. Two people infected with the corona virus have already died, most recently on Wednesday a 60-year-old French.

In Paris, the well-known agricultural salon also closed its doors earlier and ended on Saturday. The organizers of the real estate salon Mipim in Cannes, one of the most important international industry events, has postponed the event from March to the beginning of June.

No major events in Switzerland either

On Friday, Switzerland had banned all major events with more than 1,000 people, including the Geneva Motor Show, which attracts more than 600,000 visitors every year, and the Basel Carnival. In the Alpine country, 15 people tested positive for the new Sars-CoV-2 virus by Friday.
