Circulatory disorders

Updated on All content is checked by medical journalists.

Long journeys and climatic changes are stressful for the body. Sensitive people can react to this stress with circulatory problems.

Older people and people with pre-existing cardiovascular diseases are particularly affected. Circulatory disorders occur mainly when standing up or while standing for a long time.

The blood pressure drops, the blood sinks in the legs and no longer supplies the brain with sufficient oxygen. Circulatory disorders are therefore initially noticeable as dizziness and flickering in front of the eyes. In severe cases, a brief fainting may occur.

General circulatory problems

  • Drink a lot, but avoid alcoholic beverages.
  • Stand up slowly, moving your legs before you stand up.
  • Avoid vigorous physical exertion.
  • Avoid extreme heat or direct sunlight.
  • Do not eat large meals; it is better to have several small meals a day.

Permanently low blood pressure is generally not harmful. However, if this makes you feel severely restricted, talk to your doctor. He will advise you on a possible therapy.

Fainting

Fainting occurs when the brain is temporarily short of oxygen. By sinking, the body helps itself: cerebral blood flow is improved. Therefore, the person concerned can be addressed again within a few seconds. If this is not the case or if paralysis, speech disorders or other impaired consciousness occur, you should immediately consult a doctor. The following measures will help if you faint:

  • Put your legs up.
  • Wait until the unconscious man wakes up and let him lie in peace for a few more minutes.
  • Give mineral water or fruit juice to drink (only if the patient is responsive!).

If the person concerned does not wake up within a few seconds, check their breathing and pulse, lay them on their side and notify a doctor.
