Since the cost of dental prostheses is made up of the individual production and accompanying treatment, there are no fixed dental prosthesis prices. Tables only give a rough guide. Read everything about denture costs and what to consider.

What do dentures cost?

The cost of dentures ranges from a few hundred to around a thousand euros and is made up of the following factors:

  • Dental charge
  • Manufacturing costs of the dental prosthesis
  • Material costs of the dentures

They are recorded by the dentist in a so-called treatment and cost plan before the treatment. The treatment and cost plan must be submitted to the statutory health insurance so that they can approve the plan and calculate the subsidies for the cost of dentures. This commitment is only valid for six months.

What statutory health insurance does not pay for can be covered, for example, with private dental insurance.

In the case of private patients, the cost of dentures will be covered depending on the tariff chosen.

Subsidies for dentures

The statutory health insurance pays a certain amount of the costs for dentures as part of standard care. Standard care is the standard therapy that is medically meaningful and at the same time economically justifiable. The fixed subsidies for dental prosthesis costs are 50 percent for standard care. The subsidy increases by a further 20 percent if a fully completed bonus booklet can be proven over five years, and 30 percent for ten years. In the bonus booklet, the doctor confirms an annual check-up appointment. Children and teenagers have to go to the dentist twice a year for the bonus. In the event of a financially unreasonable burden, the hardship rule applies, in which the fixed allowance is doubled.

Treatment and cost plan (HKP)

The HKP includes the following:

  • I: current findings of the dentition
  • II: Findings that are important for the calculation of the fixed subsidy
  • III: Cost planning - estimate by the treating dentist
  • IV: Subsidy determination - grants approved by the health insurance company
  • V: Invoice amounts - actual costs incurred as a result of the treatment

The second part of the HKP provides information about alternatives that are not part of the standard care and have to be paid for yourself.

Dentures without additional payment

If the fixed subsidies from the health insurance company exceed the dental prosthesis costs ultimately incurred - for example because the material costs are lower than estimated - the dental prosthesis is free of charge. That means that the statutory health insurance pays all costs.

Dentures abroad

The statutory health insurance fund generally covers the dental costs for treatments within the European Union. You first have to pay the bill of a foreign dentist yourself. However, you should note that the statutory health insurance will only reimburse you for the costs of treatments that are reimbursable in Germany and only up to the amount that would have been covered in Germany. Follow-up treatments due to complications are also at your own expense, so that dental prosthesis costs abroad can be more expensive than at home despite cheaper offers.
