The spectrum ranges from broken bones to appendicitis and varicose veins to hemorrhoids and herniated discs. In most cases, treatment is surgery. Non-operative (so-called conservative) therapy methods are also used in surgery.
Doctors distinguish between eight surgical specialties or specializations, with overlapping areas being possible:

- Plastic surgery
- Pediatric surgery
- Cardiac surgery
