Endocrinology is all about hormones - indispensable messenger substances that control numerous processes in the body. These include growth, development, reproduction, adaptation to the environment and reactions to stress and strain. Endocrinologists also deal with diseases of the hormone-producing organs, such as the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, adrenal glands, pancreas as well as the ovaries and testes.

Endocrinologists care for patients with the following clinical pictures:

  • Thyroid disorders (such as being overactive or underactive)
  • Addison's disease (a disease of the adrenal glands)
  • Cushing's Syndrome
  • Dysfunction of the sex glands (ovaries, testicles)
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Obesity (obesity)
  • osteoporosis
  • Lipid metabolism disorders (such as high cholesterol levels)
  • benign and malignant hormone-producing tumors

Important examination methods for endocrinological diseases are, for example, the determination of hormone concentrations in the blood and urine as well as imaging methods such as ultrasound, computed tomography and magnetic resonance tomography (magnetic resonance tomography).
