Infectiology is a branch of internal medicine. It deals with diseases that are the result of the transmission of viruses, bacteria and other pathogens.

Tropical medicine, in turn, is a specialty of the infectiologist. She deals with diseases that only or predominantly occur in tropical and subtropical climates. This also includes the prevention and treatment of motion sickness through appropriate vaccinations and medication. Some hospitals offer special travel medical consultation hours for this purpose.

Some infectious diseases, such as SARS and Ebola, are highly contagious. Patients who are suspected of being infected must be accommodated in specially secured single rooms. In some hospitals there are specially equipped rooms that are equipped, for example, with vacuum air locks (isolation locks) and the sanitary areas of which are disposed of separately. These precautionary measures are intended to prevent the pathogens from penetrating the outside world and infecting other people.

The most important infectious diseases that are cared for in the hospital include, for example:

  • HIV / AIDS
  • tuberculosis
  • severe pneumonia
  • severe diarrhea
  • Meningitis
  • hepatitis
  • malaria
  • viral hemorrhagic fever
  • meningitis
  • Endocarditis
  • Lyme disease
  • Amoebic dysentery
