Thoracic surgery

Thoracic surgery is responsible for diseases, injuries and malformations to be treated surgically in the area of the chest (thorax) - i.e. the pleura (pleura), the lungs, trachea and bronchi, the middle layer (space between the breastbone and the thoracic spine) and the thoracic wall.

For example, thoracic surgeons take care of:

  • inflammatory diseases of the lungs and pleura
  • Accumulations of pus inside the chest (caused for example by pneumonia or a lung abscess)
  • a pneumothorax (air in the pleural cavity = gap-shaped space between the pleura and pleura)
  • congenital malformations of the chest (e.g. funnel chest)
  • Malignant tumors in the chest (e.g. lung cancer, lung metastases)

If necessary, thoracic surgeons work together with other specialists, for example with oncologists in the case of lung cancer.

As with all surgical disciplines, treatment in thoracic surgery does not always consist of one surgical procedure. Non-surgical (conservative) therapies are also used if necessary, for example the administration of antibiotics for pneumonia or radiation therapy for lung cancer.
