The Wobenzym ingredients are a combination of three natural enzymes: bromelain, rutoside and trypsin. The main ingredient bromelain belongs to the cysteine protease family, which is extracted from pineapple and has a decongestant effect on inflamed tissue. The same applies to rutoside, a flavonoid that occurs in many plants. Animal trypsin is very similar to the human enzyme and prevents unnatural clumping of blood platelets. It stimulates blood circulation and supplies the tissue with nutrients.
Enzymes promote physiological processes in the body. Metabolic processes run through them much faster. In the case of inflammation, the Wobenzym effect is based on an acceleration of the natural healing process.
When is Wobenzym used?
Wobenzym is primarily used for inflammation and swelling after injuries. It also helps with acute phlebitis (thrombophlebitis) and joint inflammation (activated osteoarthritis).
What side effects does Wobenzym have?
As with any other effective drug, side effects can occur with the use of Wobenzym. However, these are relatively low and rarely occur.
Occasional Wobenzym side effects include gas, bloating, or loose stools. Patients rarely experience nausea and diarrhea after treatment. Vomiting, sweating, headaches or feeling hungry can only occur very rarely.
If unpleasant side effects occur, the drug can be safely discontinued. Consult a doctor in the event of any deviating side effects.
You should keep this in mind when using Wobenzym
The dose of Wobenzym varies depending on the severity and type of inflammation. In any case, the exact dosage information in the package insert must be read or the doctor or pharmacist asked for advice before use. In acute injuries, the drug should be taken until the inflammation has completely healed, but not longer than described. A doctor should be consulted in the event of chronic illness.
Wobenzym should be taken with about 250 ml of water 30 to 60 minutes before meals. Simultaneous consumption with food can lead to intolerance or loss of effectiveness. The tablets are coated with an enteric film that protects the active ingredients from being broken down in the stomach. This protection is only guaranteed if the tablet is swallowed whole and unbroken.
Overdose
The maximum daily dose of Wobenzym can vary between six or twelve tablets depending on the dosage form and must not be exceeded. The package insert must be observed here. If severe side effects occur in the event of an overdose, a doctor must be consulted. In general, the side effects increase with increasing dose.
Contraindications
If allergies to the ingredients or auxiliary substances are known, Wobenzym must not be taken.
Furthermore, the drug must not be taken in the case of:
- Bleeding disorders (e.g. hemophilia)
- Simultaneous use with anti-coagulants (anticoagulants)
- shortly before or after an operation
There are some medicines which, if taken at the same time as Wobenzym, can cause side effects and interactions. These drugs include:
- Antibiotics (their effect is increased)
- Anticoagulants (anti-coagulant effect is increased)
Pregnancy and lactation, use in children
There are insufficient studies that guarantee the integrity of the unborn child if Wobenzym is used during pregnancy. For this reason, the drug should only be taken after a benefit-risk assessment by the doctor.
The ingredients of the drug can be transferred to the newborn through breast milk. According to current studies, short- or long-term damage to the child cannot be ruled out.

Wobenzym is an over-the-counter drug that is available in all pharmacies in different packaging sizes. There are currently several Wobenzym products on the market such as Wobenzym Plus, Wobenzym P or Wobenzym immune.
