The number of corona infections is increasing and increasing. In Germany it is currently higher than it has been since April. And the WHO expects up to two million deaths worldwide - possibly even more.

The number of reported new corona infections in Germany continues to rise and reached a new daily high since April with 2507 cases on Saturday (26.09.20). This is based on information from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) on Saturday morning.

On Friday, the number of newly reported cases was still 2153. The World Health Organization (WHO) expects the number of one million reported Covid-19 deaths worldwide to be reached in the coming week. A further increase to two million deaths is unimaginable, "but not impossible," said WHO emergency aid coordinator Mike Ryan on Friday evening in Geneva.

More infections, fewer deaths

According to the RKI, numerous smaller Covid-19 outbreaks continue to occur nationwide, for example in connection with travelers returning and in connection with celebrations with family and friends. However, the proportion of Covid 19 cases among travelers returning has declined since mid-August. According to the RKI, more and more people in Germany are getting infected again.

In contrast, according to the RKI, fewer of the reported corona infected people die. "This is mainly because a relatively large number of young people are newly diagnosed, relatively few of whom become seriously ill and die." It must now be prevented in particular that older and particularly vulnerable population groups fall ill again. "Since last week there has been a slight increase in the number of cases in the older age groups; this course should be carefully monitored."

Peak at the end of March / beginning of April

The peak of new infections reported daily was at more than 6000 at the end of March / beginning of April. The number then tended to decrease and increase again in July. In August, the number of cases was just over 2000.

Drosten is currently not expecting a "lockdown"

Drosten emphasized that the situation was not comparable to that in March. Even if more than 6000 new diagnoses per day were reported soon - as was the case at the end of March / beginning of April - that would not be the same because many more were being tested. For various reasons, he does not currently see an impending "lockdown".

"We count much more sensitively," said Drosten. More of the existing infections should also be recognized than in spring - the number of unreported cases is therefore smaller than in spring. On the other hand, there are now more younger people infected who do not get seriously ill.

Nevertheless, there was no all-clear, stressed Drosten. Individual infected people - the so-called super spreaders - could, under certain circumstances, trigger a large number of secondary cases, for example in a cluster. A cluster can be a group of people at a family reunion or an office community. In the case of travelers returning, this cluster is located abroad.

AHA rules remain important

In view of the latest developments, the RKI experts also emphasize how important it is to keep distance and hygiene rules. It is "necessary that the entire population is committed to protecting against infection." According to the RKI in its current classification, the AHA rules should be consistently adhered to - also outdoors.
