The Leipzig Book Fair will not take place due to the spread of the corona virus. As planned, the trade fair should have started next week on Thursday, March 12, 2020.

(lv / dpa) - The Leipzig Book Fair has been canceled due to the corona virus. The city of Leipzig and the trade fair management made the decision together on Tuesday, as city spokesman Matthias Hasberg said. It is a preventive measure. The spring show of the book industry should have taken place from March 12th to 15th, 2020.

The rejection is a hard blow for the book industry. The book fair is seen by publishers as an opportunity to draw a lot of attention to their authors. As part of the accompanying reading festival "Leipzig reads", 3700 events at 500 reading locations were on the program.

This year around 2500 exhibitors from 51 countries were expected at the book fair. From their side there had been almost no rejections before. Only one exhibitor at the integrated comic fair Manga-Comic-Con had canceled its participation in advance.

Due to the increasing number of infections, several large trade fairs have already been canceled or postponed nationwide, including the ITB tourism exchange in Berlin, Pro Wein in Düsseldorf and the international craft fair in Munich. Last year 286,000 visitors came to the Leipzig Book Fair and its reading festival.
