The Nuvaring is a vaginal ring provided with hormones. This ring is used as a method of contraception. Read the most important information about the effect and use of the drug.

This active ingredient is in Nuvaring

The Nuvaring contains two female contraceptive sex hormones: the progestin etonogestrel and the estrogen ethinylestradiol. The ring inserted into the vagina releases small amounts of these hormones into the blood. Estrogens inhibit the release of hormones that are responsible for egg maturation. Progestins change the consistency of the lining of the uterus so that fertilized egg cells cannot implant. They also thicken the plug of mucus in the cervix, which protects against the penetration of sperm. The hormones released in this way prevent ovulation and a possible pregnancy.

When is Nuvaring used?

The Nuvaring is used for contraception. It is particularly recommended if regular pill intake cannot be guaranteed. Since the Nuvaring application bypasses the gastrointestinal tract, this method of contraception is also suitable for women for whom the pill does not offer adequate protection due to illnesses.

What are the side effects of Nuvaring?

Despite the generally good tolerability, the Nuvaring also has side effects. The most common complaints are headache, stomach and chest pain, nausea, acne, reluctance to have sex, edema, vaginal inflammation, menstrual cramps and mood swings. Weight gain is also possible through the Nuvaring application. There is also an increased risk of arterial and venous thrombus formation as well as embolism and cervical and breast cancer. The Nuvaring can also cause spotting, spotting and vaginal discharge.

You should talk to your gynecologist about possible risks, especially if you have liver disease, overweight or blood clotting disorders or if you are a smoker or diabetic. If you notice any unusual and / or very strong side effects, you should report them to your doctor and possibly stop using the ring.

You should keep this in mind when using Nuvaring

Similar to a tampon, the Nuvaring can be inserted by yourself. It should be squeezed and then inserted as deep as possible into the vagina. The exact location is not critical for a preventive effect. However, it is recommended that the contraceptive device is in an undisturbed position. If a tight fit of the ring is not guaranteed (e.g. after pregnancy), then no effective absorption of the active substance can take place.

Nuvaring: first application

The first Nuvaring application should take place at the beginning of menstruation. It should be noted that there may be insufficient hormone levels in the first week of use. During this time it makes sense to use an additional method of contraception (e.g. condom). The preparation is discontinued after three weeks and renewed after a break of seven days. During the break, the so-called withdrawal bleeding begins, which is caused by the lack of hormones.

If the Nuvaring has been forgotten, a new ring must be inserted immediately. An additional contraceptive should be used again for the next seven days. If the ring has stayed in the vagina longer than prescribed (max. Four weeks), contraceptive protection is still in place. The one-week Nuvaring-free interval is retained and a new ring can then be introduced.

The patient can easily use tampons while using Nuvarin. Vaginally administered anti-fungal medication also has no effect on nuvaring contraception and thus on nuvaring safety.

The contraceptive can be removed for up to three hours without losing its effectiveness. If the ring accidentally slips out, it can be washed off and reinserted without hesitation. It does not offer protection against sexually transmitted diseases - the use of a condom is advisable for this.

Nuvaring and antibiotics

It is possible that the Nuvaring affects antibiotics and their effects. A doctor should therefore be consulted regarding possible interactions.

How to Get Nuvaring

As a prescription drug, the Nuvaring is available from the pharmacy in packaging units with up to three rings on presentation of a prescription.
