Disinfectants have often been out of stock since the coronavirus began circulating in Germany. The World Health Organization (WHO) has published two recipes for the in-house production of ten liters of disinfectant each on its website.

The disinfectant should only be manufactured by people who have experience in handling the relevant substances. The recipes contain high-percentage, easily flammable alcohol, which can form explosive gas-air mixtures even at moderate temperatures of 19 (ethanol 80%) or 17.5 degrees Celsius (isopropyl alcohol 75%). For safety reasons, the WHO also warns against adding ingredients other than those specified in the recipe.

Recipe 1

  • Ethanol 96%: 8333 ml
  • Hydrogen peroxide 3%: 417 ml
  • Glycerin 98%: 145 ml
  • sterile distilled or boiled cold water: 1100 ml

Recipe 2

  • Isopropyl alcohol 99.8%: 7515 ml
  • Hydrogen peroxide 3%: 417 ml
  • Glycerin 98%: 145 ml
  • sterile distilled or boiled cold water: 1900 ml

You also need

  • a 10 liter glass or plastic bottle with a screw cap
  • a graduated cylinder or measuring cup
  • a plastic or metal funnel
  • smaller, securely closable vessels for dividing the solution

Manufacturing

Pour the alcohol (ethanol or isopropyl alcohol) into the sealable ten-liter container. Measure the exact amount of hydrogen peroxide and add it. Then measure the glycerine and add it.

If the glycerine is too viscous, you can dilute it with a little sterile, distilled or boiled, cold water. Now fill the container up to the ten-liter mark with the sterile, distilled or boiled, cold water. Shake the mixture thoroughly.

Divide the solution into smaller, easily sealable bottles. Let them stand for 72 hours before using the disinfectant. Then all germs that may be contained are reliably killed.

use

Thoroughly rub a handful of disinfectant liquid over the entire surface of the hands. Do not wash your hands afterwards!
