Due to the Covid-19 wave, an emergency ordinance has been in place across Italy since March 10th. It also includes restricted freedom of movement. The Foreign Office currently advises against unnecessary trips to Italy.

Restricted freedom of movement

Unnecessary travel should be avoided throughout Italy. However, it is still possible to return to a place of residence within Italy and to travel to Germany. Border closings are not planned.

There are also exceptions to the restriction of freedom of movement in the following situations:

  • verifiable work-related journeys
  • health-related reasons
  • other emergency situations

For this purpose, the traveler must fill out a self-declaration stating the necessity of the journey and carry it with him. Checks and inquiries from security and law enforcement officers must be expected, according to the Foreign Office.

Airports, ports, train stations

Italy's airports, ports and train stations are still in operation. However, due to the lower demand, many flights to and from Italy are currently being canceled. In addition, there will be no direct flights to and from China for the time being.

Health checks with temperature measurements are carried out at airports and ports, but also in overland traffic in regions with identified cases of infection.

Public life

Schools, kindergartens and universities across Italy will initially be closed until April 3, 2020. Congresses and meetings are suspended as well as cultural and social events in public or private places. Sports events are also canceled or postponed. Many bars and restaurants are closing.
