You cannot prevent a sudden hearing loss directly. But you can avoid risk factors that favor an ear attack. Learn more about it here!

If someone suddenly hears less or nothing in one ear for no obvious cause, doctors speak of sudden hearing loss or ear infarction. The exact reason for the sudden hearing problems has not yet been fully clarified. However, experts suspect that a combination of various factors leads to circulatory disorders in the inner ear that ultimately lead to sudden hearing loss. Direct prevention is not possible. But various measures help to keep the risk of hearing loss low:

  • No stress: Above all, avoid constant stress. Regularly ensure relaxation in a quiet place, away from everyday noise.
  • No tobacco: Avoid nicotine, because smoking increases the risk of sudden hearing loss.
  • Cure properly: If you have an acute infection (e.g. flu, cold), you should take it easy. If you have an otitis media, it is always advisable to visit an ENT doctor. He can estimate how high the disease-related risk of damage to the inner ear is.
  • Regular check-ups: Patients with a chronic illness such as diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol should have their doctor checked regularly.
