Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Bundesliga is to be interrupted from next Tuesday until April 2.

(lv / dpa) - The German Football League (DFL) wants to submit this proposal to the professional clubs on Monday. "The aim is still to play the season to the end by the summer - from a sporting point of view, but especially because ending the season prematurely could have existential consequences for some clubs," said the DFL.

On Thursday evening, Chancellor Angela Merkel urged the population to make drastic cuts because of the rapid spread of the corona virus and thus indirectly made those responsible for football even more responsible. Wherever possible, people should refrain from social contacts, said the CDU politician. "All unnecessary" events with fewer than 1000 participants should also be canceled.

26th matchday without spectators

The upcoming 26th matchday this weekend is to take place with the exclusion of spectators before a two-week break is planned. But even with ghost games, the season cannot continue seamlessly, as the DFL admitted on Friday.

On Wednesday there was the first corona case of a professional player in Germany: Timo Hübers from second division Hannover 96 tested positive for the Covid-19 virus. After a second case in teammate Jannes Horn was added on Thursday, the team is closed in quarantine. The match between Hanover and Dresden should therefore be the only one to be canceled this weekend.
