Despite the cancellation of the ITB travel fair in Berlin due to the corona virus, the Thuringia exhibition opened its gates to visitors on Saturday. In Erfurt you can find out about the latest trends in building and gardening for a good week.

Landtag seeks closeness to the citizens

(jr / dpa) Thuringia's largest consumer fair started its 30th edition on Saturday. Tens of thousands of visitors are expected there by March 8th. The fair is a performance show of the Thuringian economy and a showcase for regional products, said state parliament president Birgit Keller (left) at the opening.

The state parliament is also represented with a stand. “For us, the trade fair is an important platform for dialogue; a good place to talk to a lot of people, ”she emphasized. "Right now, the dialogue with people is more important than ever," said the Speaker of Parliament, referring to the current government crisis in the Free State.

Hygiene precautions for visitors tightened

In view of the recent spread of the corona virus in Germany, the hygiene precautions have been increased, according to the organizer RAM Regio. Handrails on the site are also cleaned and disinfected and the surfaces in the toilets are cleaned more often than usual. In addition, more disinfectant dispensers have been set up, said Constanze Kreuser, Managing Director of the German Press Agency. However, hygiene was an important topic during the Thuringia exhibition in previous years with a view to the flu season.

Exhibition focus on building and gardening

Overall, the show offers information on various topics on more than 33,000 square meters. According to the organizers, half of the exhibition space is used for building and gardening. These include heating systems, solar systems including storage, and networked kitchens. There are also numerous lectures by gardening and plant experts. On the opening weekend, a wedding fair and an exchange for real estate in the Free State were also offered. Next weekend (March 7/8), a health fair will attract additional visitors to the area.

Last year the organizers counted around 70,000 visitors to the Thuringia exhibition. It is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. That is why all visitors born in 1990 were given free entry on the opening day.

Large events carry a high risk of spreading

On the eve of the opening, the German government's coronavirus crisis team recommended that all organizers of major events carry out a risk assessment based on the standards of the Robert Koch Institute and, if necessary, also consider short-term cancellations. The ITB travel fair planned for the coming week in Berlin has already been overturned.

People who have become infected with the coronavirus can transmit it long before the symptoms of the disease break out. Recently, a couple from the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Heinsberg allegedly infected other people while participating in a carnival event without knowing it. Only on the following days did both spouses experience typical symptoms of the lung disease COVID-19. It is now particularly difficult to follow up the possible chains of infection.
